Tatami
mats are traditional Japanese flooring, originally made of rush grass and rice
straw, which are now often made out of polystyrene foam with a brocade or plain
cloth border. While tatami mats were initially a luxury item for the wealthy at
a time when the average citizen lived on dirt floors, there are now many households
with rooms featuring both wooden floors and tatami mats. The standard tatami mat
measures approximately 180 cm x 90 cm (differing slightly depending on the region
in Japan), which is currently the measurement used to describe the size of a room
in Japan.
Tatami mats have since evolved and are now offered in different shapes and colors
to fit modern tastes. There are now tatami that can be placed on wooden floors
for those wanting to add a little modern Japanese design to their western-style
room layouts. Modern tatami are even used on beds, chairs, and other interior
items by those who are attracted to the tatami's simple design as well as its
natural aroma, which is said to calm the spirit. Furthermore, since tatami mats
block the cold air in the winter, absorb heat in the summer, absorb moisture when
humid, and release moisture when dry, they are thought to be eco-friendly and
beneficial for your well-being. |
