Natsu Matsuri
During the summer months from July through August, the entire country of Japan becomes heated with excitement for natsu matsuri (traditional summer festivals). If you begin to see women in the cities wearing yukata (a cotton kimono usually worn at the festivals) you know that the summer festival season has finally come. Parades of people in happi (festival coats) carrying omikoshi (portable shrines), traditional Japanese festival decorations such as lanterns, taiko drumming, singing, and dancing can all be seen throughout many blocked off streets. The usual food and game booths found at any seasonal festival reappear. Fireworks are also the main part of the excitement of summer festivals. Major companies as well as small local shops sponsor the various festivals while neighborhood organizations come together to practice and prepare for the events.

A few famous summer festivals are the Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori prefecture, Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, and Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka, but there are many others of various scales from a few thousand participants to 3 million and beyond. No matter where you are in Japan, you are likely to find one held nearby during these months so look around and see the excitement with your own eyes. Even better, if you have extra time, there are also ways to participate in the omikoshi (portable shrines) parades or the dancing groups to really enhance the experience.
