Curry
Japanese style curry, usually a thicker and sweeter version of those found in other cuisines, is one of the most popular dishes in Japan, especially among children. Its popularity perhaps has to do with the various Japanese curry mixes available that make the process of making simple curry easy.

The most typical Japanese style curry dish includes vegetables such as onions, carrots, potatoes, and meat. The meat is usually pork, beef, or chicken. Curry is a ubiquitous dish found in school lunches, restaurants, supermarkets, and of course in the household. Nevertheless, even with all the fast food chains that serve only curry based dishes such as curry rice, restaurants serving curry udon (thick wheat noodles), and convenience stores selling curry filled bread, there still seems to be enough room for more variation.

With the increasing popularity of Indian style curry and recipes with spicy or unique ingredients for adults, curry in Japanese cuisine has reached a new level. Currently there are enough variations of curry that several publishers have come out with curry restaurant guides, and there is even a curry museum food theme park. From expensive curries using high quality beef, soupier curries, curries oven baked with cheese, curries using local ingredients such as goya (bitter gourd commonly used in Okinawan cuisine) to unique curries from specialty curry with raw egg, the variations are limitless even in supermarkets where you will see a line of prepackaged curry made by well known curry specialty shops.
