Akihabara,
also known as "Akiba", is a district in central Tokyo that has been famous for
its many electronic stores but is now also a community for various subcultures.
Even for shopping alone, you will find a variety of items at every corner of
Akihabara that will bring out the geek in anyone, from anime paraphernalia, toys,
and games, to computer parts and other electronics. You may have a passion for
miniature trains, capsule toys, trading cards, antique swords, fan comics, anime
character costumes, dolls, robots and hi-fi equipment. Or you may just be looking
for parts to fix your vintage electronics. Whatever your objective, Akihabara
is definitely the place to go.
Despite Akihabara¡Çs various unique offerings, the district was not always
at the center of attention. It was not until the popularity of a TV drama based
on the true story of a Japanese geek where many scenes were shot in this district,
that the district¡Çs subcultures became widely accepted.
Since, the maid cafes, salons, and bars, or reflexology, aromatherapy, and
foot spas where employees work dressed in maid costumes have become the area¡Çs
most famous offerings. Furthermore, with the arrival of the new Yodobashi Akiba
multimedia superstore and UDX building with restaurants, shops, showrooms, and
museums, and the redevelopment of the Akihabara railway station, whole families
are riding the new Tsukuba Express railway from the suburbs to experience the
latest Tokyo hotspot. |
